BMW stolen without keys hits the BBC Watchdog.

Just for everyone's info the story about BMW still standing firm over the car thefts without keys is on the BBC tonight on Watchdog at 8.

It really did not have to hit this for BMW to do something and insurers and the police are now talking with BMW. jesus.

    Well,

BMW said. When we designed the car, this tech did not exist. Fair enough.

Any car built after 2011 cannot be stolen this way. So no new ones then.

So, why would they worry about second hand cars?

Besides servicing them, they don't care as the franchisees take the hit for that.

The insurance premiums will just go through the roof for these cars.

From reports an F Series car possibly got stolen this way on pistonheads? There has been no actual confirmation saying that the F series cars were not stolen in this manner.

BMW this tech did not exist...leaving an OBD open for reprogramming is beyond stupid. Why would some manufacturers not even allow a dealership to do it themselves without ordering?...it is pretty obvious.

Because end of the day not all dealerships are franchised and in addition you need to keep the flow of cars moving through so you do need a second hand market...if person a cannot sell his car or hand it to a dealership because they cannot sell you no longer have that dealership so you do in fact have a problem....it is not like the e series cars finished long ago many are still within the BMW dealer network really.

most have been on excesses not premium based increases.

BMW have dropped the ball with this one but it's been a long running story with VWs since the mk4 golf, with the right software virtually any car can be stolen without the keys.

Anyone know what models (or year) cars are affected by this? Is it anything pre-2011, or is there also a 'start' date?

Yes, it seems to be about that from what we've just read - 2005/6 ish and onwards (well, up to last year by all accounts anyway).

Would this be a key you turn in the barrel or a key you stick in the dash?

WTF does Anne Robinson think she looks like?

Not good from BMW really, would be good if they offer a retro fit fix FOC to owners. Whether they will or not is another matter.
